Crochet cable Head Band

A thick chunky head band with a central crochet cable stitch.

I've recently learnt how to cable stitch crochet, and it makes a big difference to the intricacy of crochet projects. As I've said, I'm busy creating Christmas presents, and so I thought a cable stitch headband would be a great idea to display my new-found achievement and make a lovely present for one of my friends.

Skills needed:

.Double crochet (dc)
. Slip stitch (ss)
. Decrease double crochet
. Front-post treble crochet (fptc) Instructions:
Yarn over twice. Insert hook from front to back between posts of double crochet directly below, and then back to front again between next two posts. Yarn over and draw yarn around the post of the stitch. (4 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw yarn through 2 loops on hook, three times.
. Back-post treble crochet (bptc) Instructions:
Same as fptc, but bring yarn back to front, and then front to back.

For the headband:

Step One. Chain 10
Step Two. Chain 2 (1st dc) and dc into each next stitch
Step Three. Turn, chain 2. Two more dc. Next, skip two stitches and fptc around the post directly below. Fptc around the next post below. Then return to two previous posts and fptc around the 1st and the 2nd. Return and three more dcs.
Step Four. Turn, chain 2. Two more dcs. Next, bptc around next 4 posts. 3 dcs.
Step Five. Turn, and repeat steps three and four until it has reached the desired length.
Step Six. Decrease dc twice, Two dc, decrease dc twice.
Step Seven. Decrease dc twice. Fasten off.


Step Eight. On other end of band, link in yarn and repeat steps six and seven. Chain 5 and ss into 1st chain to create button hole. Sew button onto other end of band.

. Step Nine. Using a different colour sc around the outside of the band.

And there you have it! A lovely cable stitch headband to keep your ears warm in the depths of winter. Cable stitches are no longer just for the knitters out there - us crocheters can also easily master this skill which gives a lovely plait-like pattern in crochet designs.
